The distinction matters: only the preconfigured DALL-E GPT product within the ChatGPT interface is being retired. DALL-E itself remains available through OpenAI’s API for developers, and custom user-built GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected. ChatGPT Images 2.0 carries over the core generation and editing capabilities, while advanced features such as Images with thinking — which allows the model to reason through visual composition before generating — remain initially restricted to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.
A Consolidation Trend Across OpenAI’s Product Stack
The DALL-E GPT sunset is part of a broader pruning of ChatGPT’s model lineup. OpenAI retired o3 from ChatGPT on August 26 after a 90-day sunset period, and retired GPT-4.5 from the consumer product in late June. Each removal has followed the same pattern: OpenAI adds the retirement to release notes, offers users a defined download window, and routes the underlying capability into a newer integrated product rather than maintaining a standalone specialised tool.
The consolidation reflects competitive pressure from rivals that have moved toward seamless, model-agnostic image generation embedded in broader assistants. It also reduces interface complexity, which had become a recurring complaint: at peak, ChatGPT offered more than a dozen distinct model options and several specialised GPTs, creating a fragmented user experience.
What Users Should Do Before August 30
Users can access generated images through the Images section in ChatGPT’s web and mobile interfaces. The fastest recovery path is to use ChatGPT’s search function to locate conversations containing images, then select Save or Copy for each file.
