A massive section of glacier at roughly 5,200 metres elevation in Nepal’s Langtang national park sheared free on Wednesday morning and plunged into the Lhende River on the Tibetan side of the border. The ice-rock collapse temporarily dammed the river before releasing a wall of water, pulverised ice, and debris that swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district, striking the settlements of Timure and Syapru Besi. The Trishuli River rose nine metres within thirty minutes of the flood’s arrival.

Nepal’s home ministry confirmed 389 deaths on the Nepali side and three in Tibet’s Gyirong County, with the toll expected to climb as rescuers reach more remote areas. More than 1,500 people remain unaccounted for across both countries. According to Nepal’s Tourism Board, the missing include 668 foreign nationals from 34 countries — India accounts for 177 of those, the United States for 90, Australia for 34, the United Kingdom for 33, and Canada for 25.

The Anatomy of the Disaster

The U.S. Geological Survey initially flagged a magnitude 4.4 earthquake but later determined the seismic signal was generated by the landslide itself, registering as magnitude 5.2. No prior rainfall was recorded in the area. Scientists are investigating the role of glacial melt, noting that Nepal’s glaciers have shed nearly one-third of their ice volume over three decades, and satellite data showed unusually warm conditions and diminished snow cover in the days preceding the collapse.

The scale of infrastructure damage compounds the rescue effort: 19 bridges were destroyed and approximately 40 kilometres of roads were wrecked across the Rasuwa district. High river levels have prevented helicopters from reaching several of the hardest-hit villages. More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police personnel have been deployed, and rescuers extracted 350 workers from a flooded tunnel at the Upper Trishuli hydropower project on Friday. A lake has since formed at the original collapse site, raising warnings of secondary flooding downstream.

International Response

Aid commitments arrived swiftly. India dispatched ten tonnes of emergency supplies by aircraft, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged further support. The United Nations allocated $2 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund, Australia announced $3.6 million in assistance, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies released 1 million Swiss francs ($1.2 million). The United States committed $500,000 and deployed a disaster response adviser. South Korea has planned a rapid-response team deployment, and the European Union activated its Copernicus satellite mapping service to support search operations.

The Nepal-Tibet border region has seen repeated flood disasters as Himalayan glaciers retreat under rising temperatures. The disaster echoes an earlier monsoon season crisis in Bangladesh, where monsoon floods killed 59 and stranded more than a million people this summer, illustrating the scale of climate-driven displacement across South Asia.
